Georgia Tech cut a swath through the Atlantic Coast Conference softball tournament last week.
The Yellow Jackets blanked all three of their opponents, including Virginia Tech, 1-0, in the tourney championship game. Ranked No. 16 nationally and boasting a 49-12 record, the Jackets were hoping for one of the 16 top seeds in the NCAA Tournament.
Instead, Georgia Tech had to settle for a third seed in the Georgia Regional behind the host Bulldogs (51-13) and Kansas (30-22), a team with 19 fewer victories.
“We certainly felt we had an excellent chance to be a No. 1 seed,” Tech coach Ehren Earleywine said. “Unfortunately, that did not happen, but that doesn’t change how we feel about what we’ve accomplished and what we believe we can accomplish next.”
Second-seeded KU and third-seed Tech will meet at 4 p.m. CDT Friday in Athens, Ga., with top-seeded Georgia scheduled to battle No. 4 seed Tennessee Tech (35-26) at 6:30 p.m. Tennessee Tech was an automatic qualifier after winning the Ohio Valley Conference tourney.
The double-elimination meet will continue with three games Saturday and a championship game Sunday.
