Self: Langford could play in Big 12 Tournament

There was some good news regarding Kansas University’s Keith Langford on Monday.

The senior guard was diagnosed with a severe left ankle sprain, not a break.

There’s a chance he could play in this week’s Big 12 tournament.

“The word is it is not cracked or fractured,” coach Bill Self said of the ankle Langford hurt three minutes into Sunday’s game at Missouri.

“It is a severe sprain that will allow him hopefully to rehab this week and we’ll evaluate this weekend to see if he can play this weekend. He thinks he can and hopes he can. We’ll see.

“But he is not lost … not lost for the season,” Self added.

Self said there’s a chance he could rest Langford all weekend and make sure he’s ready for the NCAA Tournament.

“We’ll see what happens this week through treatment,” Self said. “If he can get to 80, 90 percent, we’ll play him. If not, we won’t.”

Langford is on crutches and “will remain the rest of the week,” Self said. “Chances are he could play this weekend and there’s a great chance we’ll hold him out, too. We want him to be 100 percent next week.”

Simien named Big 12 Player of the Year
Kansas senior Wayne Simien has been named the unanimous Big 12 Conference player of the year by the league coaches, the fourth Jayhawk to win the award.

Simien led the Big 12 in scoring (19.4 points per game) and rebounding (11.1), the only player in the conference to average a double-double.

Langford was named to the all-Big 12 second team, and fellow senior Aaron Miles was named to the third team. Other Big 12 honors included Taj Gray (Oklahoma) as newcomer of the year, Daniel Gibson (Texas) as freshman of the year and Billy Gillispie (Texas A&M) as coach of the year.

Simien also was named to the all-Big 12 first team by the Associated Press on Monday. Langford and Miles both were named to the second team.
