KU’s Giles hurts hip

Kansas University sophomore C.J. Giles will not be playing for USA Basketball’s Under 21 team next month in Argentina.

Giles, a 6-foot-11 forward from Seattle, fell hard during the first of four tryout sessions Thursday in Dallas and suffered a bruised left hip. He couldn’t practice Friday and will not be able to practice today.

He has returned to Lawrence for treatment with an invitation from USA Basketball to now try out for the World University Games team Thursday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“It’s been painful for him. He’s been icing it and receiving treatment,” said Caroline Williams of USA Basketball. “He’s disappointed, but wants to try to make the second (World Games) team and hopes to be able to try out next week.”

Twenty players are vying for 12 spots on the roster of the team that will compete at the Under-21 world championships Aug. 5-14 in Argentina.
