Miami ? Jamaal Tinsley scored 30 points, including a jumper to force overtime, and Reggie Miller hit a pair of 3-pointers in the extra session to help the Indiana Pacers defeat the Miami Heat 106-100 on Friday.
The teams’ first meeting since last season’s Eastern Conference semifinals was a thriller.
Tinsley, who’s averaging 29.7 points over his last three games, hit an awkward shot over Miami’s Keyon Dooling to tie the game with 0.9 seconds left in regulation. Miller opened the overtime scoring with a 3-pointer, then added another for a 101-96 Indiana lead with 1:36 remaining.
Jermaine O’Neal had 26 points and a game-high 14 rebounds for Indiana. Miller had 18 points.
Dwyane Wade scored 30 points for Miami, which made 48.1 percent of its shots from the field _ and 47.2 percent from the foul line, missing 19 of its 36 attempts from the stripe. Shaquille O’Neal scored 24 points and Udonis Haslem had 16 points and 11 rebounds for the Heat.
Miami used a 13-2 run to lead 86-82 with 2:31 left in regulation, following a six-minute stretch where the Pacers missed all eight of their shots from the field. But Indiana then scored five straight points _ four from Tinsley _ to reclaim the lead.
The lead changed hands on the next five possessions, until Haslem hit one free throw for a 93-91 Miami lead with 12.3 seconds left, then missed the second _ and Tinsley had just enough time to tie it.
Indiana, which benefited from 16 Heat turnovers that led to 21 points, has now won 10 straight regular-season games over Miami. Plus, the Pacers beat the Heat in six games during the 2004 playoffs.
The Pacers led 47-46 after the first half, one where the Pacers quickly built a big lead, then rallied.
Tinsley hit his first five shots, part of Indiana’s 12-for-16 effort in the game’s first 10 minutes that staked the Pacers to a 30-19 edge. Indiana then missed 17 of its next 20 shots, and Miami responded with a 27-8 run to take a 46-38 lead on a Shaquille O’Neal three-point play with 2:44 left before halftime.
Wade had six points in a 10-0 spurt that opened the burst, and Miami retook the lead for the first time since the opening possession when Rasual Butler hit consecutive 3-pointers for a 41-35 edge with 4:02 left.
And then, momentum suddenly turned again. Indiana closed the half on a 9-0 run, aided by a major blunder from Damon Jones shortly before intermission.
Wade stole a pass from Tinsley and tossed the ball upcourt to Damon Jones, who _ instead of simply taking the uncontested layup _ lobbed the ball off the backboard, an effort to set Wade up for a dunk
But Indiana’s Fred Jones broke up the play, then came downcourt and hit a 3-pointer with 55 seconds left putting the Pacers on top and prompting Heat coach Stan Van Gundy to angrily slam a towel on the bench.
