Kansas University women’s soccer players Caroline Smith and Holly Gault have been invited to training camp with the Under-21 United States women’s soccer national team.

“This is a great honor for both Caroline and Holly,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “It is a great reflection of our program that our players are beginning to receive national attention. I’m very proud for both of them, and I know that they will represent the University of Kansas very well.”

Gault, a sophomore from Spring Hill, anchored a young Jayhawk defense, which surrendered only 13 goals and finished ninth in the country with a team goals-against average of 0.55. She was selected first-team All-America by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America.

Smith, a junior from Edina, Minn., earned All-America honors for the second consecutive season. She led KU in scoring for the third consecutive season, topping the Jayhawks in goals (11), assists (10) and points (32).

? Kansas University golfer Kevin Ward and former Jayhawk Tyler Hall have advanced to the Sweet 16 at the prestigious Western Amateur Golf Tournament at Point O’Woods Golf Club.

Hall, a recent KU grad from Wayne, N.J., shot a 272, good for a tie for second in four rounds of stroke play. Aron Price was the medalist at 265.

Ward, a KU senior from Leawood, shot 280 to earn a share of 12th.

KU senior Andrew Price tied for 16th after rounds of 69-71-70-69, but lost in a playoff and did not advance to match play.

“They are playing great,” KU coach Ross Randall said of the Jayhawks. “Kevin has been on fire for several weeks now. I am really thrilled they made the Sweet 16 of the second-most prestigious amateur event in the country.”

Hall and KU’s Tyler Docking have qualified for the most prestigious amateur event — the U.S. Amateur.
