Norman, Okla. ? Kansas University’s track and field team sent 11 Jayhawks to the Sooner Invitational on Saturday for one final tuneup before next week’s Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
“The athletes that traveled to Oklahoma turned in some very good performances,” KU head coach Stanley Redwine said. “Hopefully, they can build on those performances next weekend at the conference meet.”
Kansas dominated the men’s shot put, taking the top two places. Junior Sheldon Battle won the event with a throw of 62 feet, 8 inches, while sophomore Gavin Ball finished second at 55-7 1/2.
Sophomore Charles Murphy set a personal best while finishing third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.21.
On the women’s side, junior Charisse Bacchus won the long jump with a season-best jump of 19-93/4.
Senior Brooklyn Hann and freshman Crystal Manning finished 2-3 in the triple jump. Hann covered 41-6, and Manning had a personal-best jump of 40-3 3/4.
Other notable finishes on the women’s side included sophomore Kara Euler’s third in the 400-meter dash (58.75) and junior Jen Widerstrom’s fourth in the weight throw (51-03.75).
The Big 12 Championships will be Friday and Saturday in Lincoln, Neb.
