Columbia, Mo. ? Exactly one month ago today, Missouri University’s women’s basketball team romped to a 67-49 victory over Oklahoma State.
The Tigers haven’t won since.
MU hopes to end a seven-game losing streak when it plays host today to archrival Kansas University.
Tipoff will be at 1:05 p.m. at Mizzou Arena.
Two weeks ago, KU edged the Tigers, 63-61, in Allen Fieldhouse, thanks mainly to Crystal Kemp scoring 22 points and snatching 14 rebounds. Lately, though, Kemp has struggled. She has scored only 10 points in each of the last two KU outings — losses to Nebraska and Oklahoma.
KU coach Bonnie Henrickson is more concerned about the Jayhawks’ overall attack. Kansas has fallen to last in the Big 12 Conference in scoring at 57.9 points a game, mostly because the offense has bogged down in halfcourt.
“In nonconference, we averaged 25 to 28 possessions in transition,” Henrickson said. “We are now down to five or six possessions in transition.”
KU’s offensive woes have been more pronounced in league games. The Jayhawks (9-10 overall, 2-6 Big 12) are averaging only 52.3 points in eight Big 12 games.
Missouri has struggled on offense, too. The Tigers (7-12, 1-7) are averaging only 60.4 points a game, but should be well rested. Mizzou hasn’t played since Saturday — a 71-52 home loss to Texas.
Oklahoma thumped KU, 65-49, Wednesday in Allen by exploiting a depth advantage. OU coach Sherri Coale used a stream of players to wear down the thin Jayhawks.
“That’s nothing different than we’ve seen all year,” Henrickson said.
Today’s game will be the Jayhawks’ third on the road in their last four, and they must play Wednesday at Oklahoma State. However, after the trip to Stillwater, Okla., KU will have four straight in Allen Fieldhouse.
