Brandon Rush completed his 48-hour visit to Kansas University on Tuesday, and the Jayhawks perhaps emerged as the leading candidate to land the 6-foot-6 basketball player.
“I had a great time on my visit,” Rush told the Journal-World, indicating he had not yet given an oral commitment, but had eliminated Illinois and narrowed his choices to KU and Indiana.
“The visit went real well. Jeremy Case was my host. He took me on a tour of the campus,” Rush added, noting, “I probably won’t decide for two more days.”
Later Tuesday night, however, Rush’s AAU coach indicated Illinois still was in the running.
The 20-year-old Rush, who has been seeking a college since pulling his name out of the NBA Draft, told Wichita TV station KAKE, “The biggest factor is that I want to play close to home.”
That obviously would favor the Jayhawks, since KU’s campus is just down the road from Rush’s mother’s and grandmother’s home in Kansas City, Mo.
Rush said Tuesday he had not yet been cleared to play by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Sources believe Rush ultimately will be cleared to play.
“Because my Clearinghouse stuff is not in, I’d have to enroll after Thursday if I decide to go to KU,” Rush said, well aware Thursday is the first day of classes at KU.
Rush, who averaged 21 points, six rebounds and five assists a game last season at Mt. Zion Academy in Durham, N.C., has visited KU, Illinois and Indiana in the span of 10 days.
