In its quest to return to winning ways, the Kansas University women’s basketball team just landed another impact player – and she’s as big a winner as they get.
Sade Morris, an athletic 6-foot guard from Norman, Okla., gave an oral commitment to coach Bonnie Henrickson’s squad Saturday. KU now has three pledges for the 2006 class, as Morris joins Olathe East guard Danielle McCray and Overland Park Aquinas guard Lindsay Ballweg to make an impressive trio.
“She’s got a lot of talent,” said Matilda Mossman, Morris’ coach at Norman High. “The best part is, she’s going to continue to get better.”
And winning, it seems, follows Morris wherever she goes. In her two years as captain at Norman, the Tigers have gone 50-5. That includes a Class 6A state title in 2005, and Morris’ performance in the tournament earned her most valuable player honors.
In addition, Morris’ AAU team won the 17-U national championship last month, and her Junior-Olympic team, the Oklahoma Pride, won the Junior Olympics in July.
About every Big 12 Conference school was showing interest in Morris, as well as national powers Duke, Tennessee and Vanderbilt. As a junior on a balanced Norman team, Morris averaged 13 points and five rebounds per game.
“More than just a great player, they’re getting a great kid,” said Mossman, who coached Kansas State in the 1980s. “She’s very mature. She’s been team captain for us since her sophomore year, and that’s rare.
“She’s very athletic, has real long arms and she’s quick. Defensively, it’s hard to get the ball around her when she’s guarding you.”
Morris’s commitment is non-binding until she signs her letter of intent, presumably during the early signing period this fall.
