Kansas University's Jackie Vasquez (3) gets caught in a run down between Oklahoma infielders Christina Enea (10) and Tayl'r Hollis during the fifth inning. The Jayhawks beat the fifth-ranked Sooners, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.

Destiny Frankenstein embraced every one of her Kansas University softball teammates within hugging distance.

No one was more delighted about KU’s stunning weekend sweep of No. 5-ranked Oklahoma than Frankenstein, the Jayhawks’ junior shortstop from Broken Arrow, Okla.

“I love it,” Frankenstein gushed following Sunday’s 4-1 victory over the Sooners at Arrocha Ballpark. “There’s nothing better than beating Oklahoma. This is awesome, and I don’t think it’s sunk in yet.”

Sunday’s relatively easy victory came on the heels of Saturday’s nail-biting 5-4, nine-inning triumph.

Junior second baseman Jessica Moppin was the common denominator.

Jessica Moppin connects in KU's 4-1 victory over Oklahoma. Moppin had a three-run home run against the Sooners.

In Saturday’s game, Moppin hit a two-run homer in the first inning, then drove in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with a single. Sunday, Moppin blasted a three-run homer in the first inning.

“Moppin has always been streaky,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said, “and right now she’s on fire. She obviously was the catalyst.”

Moppin drove in six of the Jayhawks’ nine runs in the two-game set and boosted her team-leading RBI total to 29. She went 5-for-8 at the plate and inflated her batting average from .288 to .310.

“I’m just in a hitting zone right now,” Moppin said, matter-of-factly.

Moppin acknowledged she has been streaky in the past, but believes she has shaken that label.

Kansas infielder Destiny Frankenstein leaps to grab a line drive in the fifth inning. The Jayhawks beat No. 5 Oklahoma, 4-1, Sunday afternoon at Arrocha Ballpark.

“I think I’m more consistent this year,” Moppin said. “I’m consistent right now, and that’s the opposite of streaky.”

Also consistent right now is KU freshman left-hander Christina Ross, who stymied the Sooners — the Big 12 Conference’s leading hitting team — on four hits to record her 10th victory.

Early in the season, Ross was the third pitcher on a three-woman staff, but over the last couple of weeks the freshman southpaw has ascended to ace status. Less than two weeks ago, the Santa Clarita, Calif., product blanked Nebraska, 3-0, and she’s been on the rise since.

“She was probably one of the five to seven top pitchers coming out of high school last year,” Bunge said. “But she got hit hard early in the season. Then we had a heart-to-heart, and she just decided to pitch her game.”

For her part, Ross admitted she had some trouble adjusting to the college mound being three feet farther back from home plate than it is in high school, but mostly she blamed homesickness and handling the workload of college academics.

“I just got my head screwed on straight,” Ross said. “A lot of it was mental, but I feel like my old self now.”

Ross fanned five Sooners and enticed five more come-backers. Frankenstein also came to the rescue in the bottom of the sixth when she speared a couple of line drives.

“Those were really good catches,” Ross said.

Kansas (22-19 overall, 5-7 Big 12) has home doubleheaders scheduled against Arkansas on Tuesday and North Dakota State on Thursday before resuming conference play at Texas Tech next weekend.

Oklahoma (42-12, 10-5) became the first ranked team to be swept by Kansas since KU took two from No. 23-ranked Baylor in 2001. The Sooners are mired in a four-game losing streak and coach Patty Gasso is looking for answers.

“I felt Kansas came out ready to play,” Gasso said, “and the Sooners are in a big, black hole now, and we’re working to get out of it.”
