Lawrence High graduate Kent Shelley reached a coaching milestone Tuesday, thanks in part to another LHS product.
Tommy Mangino, another former Lion, homered as Johnson County Community College edged Coffeyville, 5-4, for Shelley’s 500th victory as the Cavaliers’ baseball coach.
Shelley, now in his 19th year at the Overland Park school, needs just five more victories to surpass Hall of Fame coach Sonny Maynard as the program’s all-time victory leader.
Shelley, who has a 500-314-1 record, has produced nine teams that have won at least 30 games.
