LINCOLN, NEB. ? Kansas University freshman left-hander Christina Ross struck out five and allowed just three hits in the Jayhawks’ 2-0 Big 12 Conference softball victory Wednesday over 24th-ranked Nebraska.
Ross (9-6) earned her third shutout of the season.
KU improved to 20-18 overall, 3-7 in the Big 12. NU fell to 27-16 and 5-6.
Kansas collected seven hits off Ashley DeBuhr (17-14).
The Jayhawks scored the winning runs in the top of the fourth. Destiny Frankenstein homered, and Nettie Fierros hit an RBI double.
Topeka ? First baseman Leah Hansen drove in two runs and three Kansas pitchers combined on a seven-hitter in a 3-0 softball triumph over Washburn on Thursday afternoon.
Kansas managed just five hits two each by Hansen and shortstop Courtney Wright but the Jayhawks boosted their record to 22-20 by knocking off the NCAA Div. II Ichabods.
Kansas scored in the second when second baseman Amy Hulse drilled a two-out double to center and Hansen followed with a single down the left-field line.
In the fourth, Hulse drove in the Jayhawks’ second run with a sacrifice fly and Hansen singled in the third run.
Freshman Kara Pierce (14-7) started and worked four innings to earn the win. She allowed two hits and struck out two. Kirsten Milhoan took over for the next two frames and also allowed two hits.
Washburn loaded the bases against Kelly Campbell, KU’s third pitcher, in the seventh, but Campbell struck out Amy Heimen to record her second save.
KU has a two-game set with Baylor on tap this weekend at Jayhawk Field. The first game is scheduled for 5 p.m. today and the second for 1 p.m. Saturday.
