Qualifier deadline today

Odds are a Kansas University or a Kansas State golfer will fill the lone amateur berth in the Lawrence Futures Tour Classic on May 6-8 at Eagle Bend Golf Course.

As of Thursday, 13 amateur golfers had signed up for Sunday’s 18-hole qualifier at Eagle Bend. Six of the 13 are current KU golfers, and another six are on K-State’s roster. The other entrant is Tammy Harmon of Kansas City, Mo.

The KU golfers who have registered are Amanda Costner, Annie Giangrosso, Chelsey Pryor, Meredith Winkelmann, Jill Womble and Tiffany Woods.

The deadline for entering is noon today.

Sunday’s qualifier is open to women amateur golfers or full-time students at colleges or universities located within a 100-mile radius of Lawrence. Amateurs must have a verifiable USGA handicap index of six or less established at a golf course with a total yardage of 5,900 yards or more and must reside within a 100-mile radius of Lawrence.

The winner of the 18-hole stroke play qualifier will join 143 members of the LPGA Futures Tour for the 54-hole event, the first women’s pro golf tournament ever held in Lawrence.

Tournament officials still are seeking sponsors for the tournament, which will boast a $70,000 purse, and participants for a pair of pro-ams May 5. Volunteers also are needed for various tourney duties.
