Wichita ? Kansas University’s softball team dropped a doubleheader to Wichita State, 5-4 in eight innings, and 7-3, Thursday at Wilkins Stadium.
The Jayhawks (15-13) scored first in the first game in top of the third on a hit and error, but the Shockers (22-11) pulled even in the bottom of the frame.
KU regained the lead in the fourth with two runs on three hits. Serena Settlemier belted a solo home run into the wind in left field, her fifth of the season and 18th of her career, and Kassie Humphreys later doubled to score a run for a 3-1 lead.
WSU tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth on a hit, two walks and two hit batters.
In the top of the eighth, Destiny Frankenstein, who started on second base, scored after Settlemier’s single and Elle Pottorf’s sacrifice fly to give KU a 4-3 lead.
But the Shockers answered again with two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a sacrifice bunt, walk, hit batter, error and game-winning single.
Christina Ross (5-4) struck out four, gave up four hits and walked two to take the loss.
In the nightcap, KU had a 3-2 lead until the sixth when the Shockers blew open the game, scoring five runs off four hits, including a solo home run by Stephanie De La Riva.
Humphreys (3-4) gave up six hits, struck out three and walked three in 51/3 innings. Settlemier faced the last four batters and allowed one hit.
