Kansas University senior goalkeeper Meghan Miller hasn’t allowed a goal through four games this season, but the Seattle native will face her stiffest challenges thus far today and Saturday at the Furman Tournament.
The 21st-ranked Jayhawks (4-0) play host school Furman at 6 tonight and No. 7 Clemson at 11 a.m. Saturday at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, S.C.
Both foes boast offenses that pose a serious threat to Miller’s streak of four straight shutouts and 407 minutes, 27 seconds without allowing a goal.
Furman (1-3) is led by Southern Conference player of the year Andre’a Morrison, who has three goals this season from her defensive position. Midfielder Nicky Darling has two goals.
Clemson (4-0) should be the tougher foe. The Tigers skyrocketed into the top 10 after tripping No. 10 Texas, 1-0, and No. 15 Texas A&M, 4-1, two weeks ago and have outscored their opponents 9-1 this season.
“They’ve taken a few Big 12 scalps so far,” Kansas coach Mark Francis said, “so hopefully Kansas won’t be one of them.”
Francis said the Jayhawks’ unblemished record will be in serious jeopardy if they don’t play better than they did last weekend. They squeaked past Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 1-0, on Friday and struggled to shake an aggressive Saint Louis squad before winning, 2-0.
Lack of focus and an absence of intensity were KU’s primary problems, Francis said.
Meanwhile, sophomore midfielder Nicole Cauzillo’s pair of game-winning goals and Miller’s continued dominance between the posts were the few bright spots Francis saw last weekend.
“The little things that we’re not doing right we haven’t been punished for yet,” Francis said, “but if we don’t correct some of those prior to Thursday and Saturday, we could get punished.”
