Jayhawks take third at Nike Cup swim meet

? Kansas University’s swimming and diving team took third out of eight teams at the Nike Cup on Saturday in Chapel Hill, N.C.

The Jayhawks recorded 614 team points and finished 190 points behind second-place North Carolina. Purdue won with 9501/2 points. Virginia Tech finished fourth at 599.

“It was a great three-day meet for us,” KU coach Clark Campbell said. “We had some great individual performances, and we also had an outstanding team battle for third place with a nationally ranked team in Virginia Tech.”

Senior Amy Gruber won the 100 freestyle with a time of 49.70. The Bigelow, Ark., native’s time was NCAA “A” Standard time, automatically qualifying her for the 2005 NCAA Championships.

Taking home KU’s other title was sophomore Shelby Noonan in three-meter diving. The Edmond, Okla., native recorded a 487.40, qualifying her for the Zone Diving Championships.

The Jayhawks next will play host to Houston and Harvard for simultaneous duals at 6 p.m. Dec. 3 and noon Dec. 4 at Robinson Natatorium.
