Iowa City, Iowa ? Kansas University’s rowing team completed the first half of the fall season Sunday at the Head of the Iowa.
The Open Single race was paced by KU rower Erin Hennessey with a first-place time of 16:57.33, followed by Kris Lazar (third, 17:37.67) and Jennifer Pearson (fourth, 17:39.80). Kansas had seven more rowers place — Nos. 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 14 — in the singles.
The Jayhawks’ strength was the Open Four race with three boats competing. They finished third in 15:47.14, fourth in 15:51.12 and seventh in 16:12.28. Kansas placed seventh and 16th in the Novice Four race with times of 17:50.69 and 19:45.92.
Finishing the team competition were the Novice Eight and Varsity Eight races. KU earned fourth- and sixth-place finishes in the Novice Eight race and placed sixth and eighth in the Varsity Eight race.
Kansas next will compete at the Head of the Hooch on Saturday and Sunday in Gainsville, Ga., before returning home on Nov. 12 to face Kansas State in the Sunflower Showdown for the conclusion of the fall season.
