University of Kansas sophomore men’s basketball player Moulaye Niang has decided to remain at Kansas, KU coach Bill Self announced Monday.
“Moulaye and I have met several times over the last three weeks to discuss his future,” Self said. “He has now had the opportunity to think about his future at KU and also weigh the option of finishing his career elsewhere. We gave him time to weigh those options, and after doing so, he’s made the decision to remain at the University of Kansas to complete his athletic and academic careers. The players and the coaches are all very excited to have him back. Even though we hoped this would happen, I wanted to give Moulaye ample time to sort through this decision.”
A 6-10 forward from El Cajon, Calif., Niang saw action in 27 games in 2003-04, averaging 0.9 points and 1.1 rebounds per game in 4.7 minutes per contest. For his career, Niang has played in 55 games and recorded 1.1 points and 1.3 boards in 5.9 minutes per game. In addition, Niang was named to the 2004 Academic All-Big 12 Team for his efforts in the classroom.
“I was really confused at the end of the season,” Niang said. “I felt like I needed to go explore what else was out there. However, after weighing my options, I truly believe the University of Kansas is the best place for me, and this is where I want to be. I didn’t have the opportunity to play much my freshman and sophomore years, but I’m willing to work hard and do anything I possibly can to help Kansas be the best team we can possibly be.”
