? University of Oklahoma assistant men’s basketball coach Jimmy Tubbs today will be named Southern Methodist University’s head coach.

The school called a 10:30 a.m. news conference to announce the hiring.

Kansas associate head coach Norm Roberts was a finalist for the job. Roberts interviewed with the SMU search committee Monday and returned Wednesday to Dallas to talk to the school president.

“I think the University of Kansas is a remarkable place, and it’s the best place for me to be right now,” Roberts said Thursday. “I have the utmost respect for SMU and its program, but for now I want to concentrate on guiding the Jayhawks to continued success this season and in the future.”
