Norm Roberts, associate head men’s basketball coach at Kansas University, will be one of four individuals to interview today for the head-coaching job at Southern Methodist University.
Others to meet with the SMU search committee: Doug Wojcik, assistant, Michigan State; John Treloar, assistant, Indiana; and Jimmy Tubbs, assistant, Oklahoma.
The Dallas Morning News reported several Dallas high school boys basketball coaches sent a letter to SMU officials endorsing Tubbs as next Mustangs coach. Tubbs has strong ties to the area. He was a high school coach at Kimball for eight seasons and won a Class 5A state title in 1990. He was an SMU assistant for 12 seasons under John Shumate and Mike Dement, who was fired Feb. 27.
Oklahoma State assistant James Dickey also has been mentioned, along with American head coach Jeff Jones.
Roberts is in his first year at KU after working with KU coach Bill Self three years at Illinois, three at Tulsa and two at Oral Roberts.
Roberts already has talked informally with SMU officials.
“Would I have interest in that job? Yes. That’s a terrific job and unbelievable opportunity,” Roberts said last week. “The recruiting base is unbelievable in Texas. SMU has a very good basketball program and tradition of winning. SMU moving to Conference USA is exciting.”
