Corvalis, Ore. ? Oregon State scored its first four runs without a hit en route to a 5-2 win over Kansas University, and the Beavers completed a sweep of Sunday’s softball doubleheader.
Trailing 2-1 in the fifth inning of the nightcap, No. 18 OSU (26-8) took advantage of three errors by the Jayhawks (20-11) and two wild pitches by Serena Settlemier to grab a 4-2 lead before Kelly Petersen recorded the Beavers’ first hit, an RBI double.
Ta’Tyana McElroy shook off a two-run home run by Settlemier in the first and earned the win in 52/3 innings of work, allowing just three hits the rest of the way. Monica Hoffman earned her fourth save to set the OSU career record with 10.
In the first game, Hoffman scattered three hits en route to her 14th victory as OSU blanked KU, 7-0. The senior did not allow a hit after the third inning and struck out eight.
“We had two big wins over a good team today,” OSU coach Kirk Walker said. “Serena pitched a nice game for Kansas. She doesn’t pitch very often. She throws hard, but was a little wild, and that worked to our advantage today.”
