Portland, Ore. ? Kansas University’s softball squad earned a sweep of Portland State in a doubleheader Saturday.
Senior pitcher Kara Pierce (11-4) won each game for the Jayhawks. She shut down the Vikings, 1-0, in the first game, then KU held on for a 5-3 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore Serena Settlemier provided KU’s lone run in the first game after drawing a leadoff walk and eventually scoring on a fielder’s choice.
Settlemier kept going in the second game with a solo home run in the first inning. Portland State took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the inning, but KU scored four runs in the fifth to seal the win.
Pierce struck out 18 Vikings in the two games.
Kansas (20-9) plays a doubleheader against Oregon State at 1 p.m. today in Corvallis, Ore.
