KU’s Gruber 34th in first NCAA event

? Kansas University swimmer Amy Gruber competed in the 50 freestyle Thursday at the NCAA Swimming Championships. Gruber finished 34th in the 50 freestyle, three spots higher than her finish last season. She swam the event in a time of 25.76. Before the race the Bigelow, Ark., native was seeded 64th.

“This was an outstanding swim today,” KU coach Clark Campbell said. “I know she is really happy with the result. Hopefully we will see bigger and better things tomorrow.”

Gruber will compete in the 100 butterfly today.
