Topeka ? Kansas University basketball player Crystal Kemp got an interesting break from her summer routine of classes and training Thursday morning — a surprise makeover on national television.
“This still is really just a shock,” Kemp said afterward. “It probably won’t hit me until I see it on television.”
Kemp’s mother, Janice Kemp, sent a letter to the Fox talk show “Good Day Live” nominating her daughter for “Knock Knock Makeovers,” which take place live on the show.
“Crystal, get ready because this is what it’s like when you’re a big star,” said Bo Griffin, a “Good Day Live” reporter. Griffin was on the scene at Janice Kemp’s apartment, where the makeover took place.
Hair and makeup artists with Hair Productions in Topeka took Crystal from being bed-headed and sleepy-eyed to glam and gorgeous in about 35 minutes.
Janice Kemp said she wanted the makeover for Crystal to let people know how special her daughter was to her and as a birthday present. Crystal turned 20 Thursday.
Kemp, who is entering her junior year at KU, has started all but two games in her two years with the Jayhawks. The forward-center led the 2003-’04 Jayhawks in scoring, 13.4 points per game, and rebounding, 5.8 per game.
Janice Kemp said she was proud of her daughter’s accomplishments as a basketball player and a student, but that wasn’t her main reason for wanting to surprise her daughter.
Janice Kemp has dealt with several medical issues in the past several years, including an aneurysm that left her blind in her right eye, and a stroke. Crystal and her brothers, Sam and Christopher, have been blessings through it all, Janice Kemp said.
“My three children have been there for me,” she said. “But Crystal was here through all of it. She’s been my strength, my joy and my hero. There are not words to describe how happy I am that I could do this for my daughter.”

Crystal Kemp called the gift priceless.
“It’s something that comes from the heart,” she said. “My mom always told me she wanted to do something like this to show how much she appreciates me. It’s just a great surprise.”
