Kansas University’s football team isn’t the only one affected by U. S. Army Reserve call-ups.
KU has lost defensive end John McCoy, but Haskell Indian Nations University has lost three players who were in the Army Reserve.
Two Fightin’ Indians — starting fullback Billy Gilbert and red-shirt wide receiver Ace Patterson — were recalled following last season.
HINU coach Eric Brock lost safety John Miller on the first day of spring drills. Brock said Patterson was in Iraq, Miller in Afghanistan and Gilbert at Fort Riley.
Also, assistant coach Wayne Thompson spent the last year stationed at Fort Leavenworth after being called to active duty. Thompson will be back for the upcoming season.
