HILO, Hawaii ? Catcher Sean Richardson slammed four hits and drove in seven runs as Kansas University concluded its baseball swing to the 50th state with a 17-10 win over Hawaii-Hilo late Tuesday.
Richardson, a transfer from Palomar (Calif.) College, smacked a three-run double in the first inning and a grand slam in the sixth. Richardson also singled twice.
Third baseman Travis Metcalf homered and singled, scored four runs and drove in three as the Jayhawks finished with a 5-2 record against Hilo.
Chris Smart, the Jayhawks’ third pitcher, earned his first win with three innings of one-hit relief. Hawaii-Hilo outhit the Jayhawks, 18-14, but two errors led to seven unearned KU runs. KU also benefited from five hit batsmen.
Next for Kansas will be a two-game series Jan. 31-Feb. 1 at Texas Southern.
