HILO, Hawaii ? The Kansas University baseball team went 1-1 Friday against Hawaii-Hilo in a season-opening twinbill at Wong Stadium. The Jayhawks lost the first game, 7-3, then came from behind in the second game and won, 9-3.
KU allowed runs in the first, third, fourth and sixth innings of the first game. Senior right-hander Chris Smart took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits in three innings. Sophomore infielder Ritchie Price went 2-for-4 with two RBI, and senior outfielder Matt Tribble was 2-for-4 with a run.
Andy Scholl led the Jayhawks in their game-two victory, going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. Jared Schweitzer also drove in two runs, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Sophomore pitcher Don Czyz picked up the win with 3.2 innings of relief, surrendering one run on five hits while striking out three batters.
KU returns to action today at 5 p.m. CST. Junior pitcher Mike Zagurski will make his first career start for the Jayhawks.
