Indianapolis ? Former Kansas University track coach Bob Timmons is one of 37 finalists up for induction in the 2004 Class at the National Track and Field Hall of Fame, U.S. Track and Field officials announced this week.
Final balloting will be completed in September with the induction ceremony set for Dec. 3 in Beaverton, Ore.
Timmons, who retired as KU track coach in 1988, led the Jayhawks to 13 Big Eight indoor and 14 outdoor crowns. He led KU to three NCAA indoor titles and his 1970 outdoor team tied for the national title.
Other finalists include track standouts Mike Conley, Hollis Conway, Lynn Jennings, Michael Johnson and Jackie Joyner-Kersee.
Former Kansas University football coach Pepper Rodgers recently was selected for induction into the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame. Rodgers, a native of Atlanta, will be inducted April 3 at the Macon City Auditorium.
Rodgers coached four seasons (1967-70) in Lawrence and posted an overall record of 20-22. In 1968, he led the Jayhawks to the Big Eight Conference championship and to their second Orange Bowl appearance. He was named the league’s coach of the year after the 1967 season when the team finished second in the Big Eight after winless conference season the year before.
After his stint at KU, Rodgers guided programs at UCLA (1971-73) and Georgia Tech (1974-79).
