College Station, Texas ? Kansas University’s swimming and diving team was in third place of six team after Wednesday’s first day of the Big 12 Conference Championships.
KU had 64 points and trailed Texas (80) and Texas A&M (68).
The Jayhawks set school records in both events contested Wednesday. Amy Gruber, Lindsey Urbatchka, Hannah Bakke and Jenny Short were third in the 200 medley relay in 1:42.02.
In the 800 freestyle relay, Gruber, Jackie Krueger, Gina Gnatzig and Terri Schramka combined to finish third in 7:17.91.
Austin, Texas ? Kansas University’s swimming and diving team set two school records and remained in third place after the third day Friday of the Big 12 Championships.
KU has a three-day score of 361 points, 78 points ahead of Iowa State. Texas leads with 624.5 points, and Texas A&M is second with 526.
Kansas’ 400 medley relay team of Whitney Sondall, Miranda Isaac, Becca Zarazan and Gina Gnatzig finished with a school-record time of 3:46.68.
Sondall also broke the school record in the 100 backstroke in 55.38.
Kristen Johnson finished seventh in the 400 individual medley, Amy Gruber placed third in the 100 butterfly, Gnatzig was fifth in the 200 freestyle, and Hannah Bakke was fourth in the 100 breaststroke.
Kansas University’s swimming and diving team is in third place after the second day of the Big 12 Championships in Austin, Texas. The Jayhawks have a two-day score of 181, trailing the second-place Texas A&M Aggies by 52 points.
KU’s Gina Gnatzig finished fourth in the 500 freestyle in a time of 4:51.76, cracking the school’s all-time top five list and is an NCAA consideration time. Kim Bolin tied for fourth in the 50 freestyle (23.10), recording the third best time in school history and giving her an NCAA consideration time.
Amy Gruber (23.34 in preliminaries) and Ashley Dower (23.59) also recorded NCAA times, finishing 8th and 10th, respectively. The 200 freestyle relay became the third KU relay to set a school record with a time of 1:32.40. The relay featured Gruber, Dower, Bolin and Whitney Sondall
Maegan Himes placed 11th and was the Jayhawks’ top finisher in the 200 individual medley. Kristen Johnson finished in 13th and Emily Rusch placed 14th. In diving action Shelby Noonan was 14th and Tayler Eldridge was 16th in the one-meter competition.
“When the individual events start it is an opportunity for everyone to get involved,” Kansas coach Clark Campbell said. “I think our team was really motivated by the first day of relays. Historically this first day of individual events has been tough for our program. I thought we rose to that challenge today.”
The championships will continue Friday, February 27 in the third day of competition. The events will include the 400 IM, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke and the 400 medley relay.
