ISU coach Morgan seeks Big 12 explanation for official snafu in loss to KU

? Iowa State coach Wayne Morgan is looking for answers from the Big 12 Conference.

Morgan wants an explanation of a bizarre officiating decision in the Cyclones’ 90-89 overtime loss Saturday at Kansas University.

Kansas was leading 34-24 when Iowa State’s Jared Homan went to the line to shoot two free throws with 3:13 left in the first half. Homan missed, Kansas got the rebound, and the Jayhawks’ J.R. Giddens made a three-pointer at the other end.

The officials then decided that Homan was owed another free throw, so they stopped play and sent him back to the line, but counted Giddens’ basket. Homan made the second free throw, after which Iowa State was awarded possession.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” Morgan said Monday.

Morgan said he would send a tape of the sequence to the Big 12 office and ask league officials to review it.

“Obviously, the result of the game is not going to change,” Morgan said. “Hopefully, we can hope something like that doesn’t happen in the future.”

Morgan said he thought the officials could have stopped the play while Kansas was racing up the floor and given Homan his other free throw.

“I was told by an official that’s the rule, and it has to count,” Morgan said. “I was upset by it. I demonstrated my displeasure, but from that point, you have to move on and play the rest of the game.

“We will hopefully, ultimately get some kind of judgment on it.”
