Santa Barbara, Calif. ? Kansas University’s softball team extended its winning streak to seven when it went 2-0 Friday in the Softball By The Beach Invitational. The Jayhawks (9-4) defeated UC Riverside, 5-4 in eight innings, and Central Florida, 3-2.
KU rallied from a 4-0, fifth-inning deficit against UC Riverside.
Sylvia Pfeiffer started the comeback with a single, followed by Destiny Frankenstein’s double. Nettie Fierros hit a pinch-hit single to plate KU’s first run, and Frankenstein came home on an error.
Pfeiffer delivered a key two-run single in the sixth, scoring Jessica Moppin and Nicole Washburn, to tie the game at 4.
For the Jayhawks in the bottom of the eighth, Washburn delivered a squeeze bunt to score Sandy Smith with the winning run. Freshman pitcher Kassie Humphreys (5-2) struck out 10, including five in the last three innings, and allowed just four hits in eight innings.
“I saw a side of Humphreys I really liked today,” KU coach Tracy Bunge said. “She was emotionally juiced and responded well, dominating the last three innings.
KU is scheduled to face UC Santa Barbara at 6:30 p.m. and Cal-Poly at 9 p.m. (CST) today.
