SAN ANTONIO ? Kansas University went 3-0 Saturday on the first day of the weather-delayed UTSA Fastpitch Express College Classic.
The Jayhawks (5-4) defeated Colorado State 4-2, North Texas 8-1 and Bethune-Cookman 1-0.
In the opener, KU’s Nettie Fierros tied the contest 1-1 with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the third inning.
Colorado State took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, but Kansas sealed the game in the bottom of the sixth when Destiny Frankenstein belted a two-run homer.
Freshman Kassie Humphreys (3-2) gave up eight hits and struck out four in five innings to pick up the win. Kara Pierce pitched the final two innings to seal the 4-2 victory. Colorado State stranded seven runners.
Against North Texas, Kansas scored three runs on three hits in the second inning. Mel Wallach led off with a single, and Sandy Smith and Leah Mountain followed with home runs.
Kansas scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning on four hits and added another run in the six on a double by Smith. The Jayhawks finished with 11 hits, including six doubles.
Pierce (2-2) allowed four hits and no runs in six innings. She struck out six. Reliever Kathy McVey was charged with an unearned run in the seventh.
In the nightcap, Humphreys allowed only two hits in a complete-game effort.
Kansas will face Kentucky at 9 a.m. today and UT-Arlington at 1:30 p.m.
