Sports Illustrated lauds KU’s student section

Sports Illustrated has confirmed what many Kansas University students have thought for a long time — KU has one of the best student sections for NCAA men’s basketball.

But SI said while the Jayhawk faithful couldn’t unseat Duke University’s Cameron Crazies, it was one of six fan groups “that someday could challenge the Blue Devils’ supremacy.”

“Allen Fieldhouse boasts one of the greatest home court advantages in the nation, and the students also win points for good behavior — sort of,” the magazine’s campus newspaper supplement said in its Jan. 29 edition. “Known as some of the classiest kids out there, Jayhawk fans once chided former Oklahoma State center

Bryant Reeves, who was scoreless at the time, with chants of ‘Reeves has ze-ro.'”

But, the magazine noted, KU coach Roy Williams waved his hand and the chanting ended.

“Whether new boss Bill Self can maintain such control is yet to be seen,” the article said.
