OSU trounces Kansas

Oklahoma State hit 10 of its first 12 shots, including six of seven three-pointers, and blew away Kansas, 80-60, Monday in Stillwater, Okla.

The victory gave the Cowboys, ranked No. 10 in Monday’s Associated Press Top 25, took sole possession of the Big 12 Conference lead at 18-2 overall and 8-1 in the league. The 12th-ranked Jayhawks fell to 15-5 overall and 7-2 in the Big 12.

Oklahoma State’s Joey Graham scored first and Daniel Bobik hit a three-pointer on OSU’s next possession. Wayne Simien scored the next four points, but the Cowboys then went on an 8-0 run, including two three-pointers by Tony Allen, before Jeff Graves scored.

The Cowboys then extended their lead to as many as 19 points, 28-9, with hot shooting, hitting shots off the glass and as the shot clock expired.

Kansas closed the gap a bit, drawing within 14 points, 36-22, with less than three minutes remaining. KU head coach Bill Self was then called for a technical foul after no fouls were called during a battle for a rebound.

OSU started a 6-1 run with Lucas’ free throws after the technical, extending their lead to 19 points once again, and led by 18 points, 44-26, at halftime.

The Cowboys started the second half just like the started the game, scoring the first five points. Ivan McFarlin had a tip-in and Lucas hit a three-pointer, helping the Cowboys take a 23-point lead.

KU edged within 16 points over the next few minutes, but couldn’t get any closer as Oklahoma State held a 23-point lead, 64-41, with eight minutes left. The Jayhawks went on a short run and closed to within 16 points, 69-53, with just more than five minutes left but couldn’t get any closer.

Simien scored 25 points on 12-of-15 shooting for the Jayhawks, and Keith Langford had eight points. J.R. Giddens scored 12 points, and Graves had four points. David Padgett had six points, Aaron Miles scored three points, and Jeremy Case made a basket.

Allen scored 17 points for the Cowboys, Graham had 10 points, and Bobik scored 11 points. John Lucas had 21 points and McFarlin scored 12 points.

Janavor Weatherspoon scored four points for OSU, and Terrence Crawford had a point. Jason Miller had two points, and David Monds had two points.

The Jayhawks turned the ball over 18 times, and the Cowboys had 21 turnovers. OSU outrebounded Kansas, 43-26.

Kansas was 25-of-55 shooting, including 5-of-14 from three-point range, and 5-of-14 shooting from the foul line.

Oklahoma State was 25-of-53 shooting from the field, including 8-of-15 shooting from long distance, and 22-of-32 shooting from the charity stripe.
