Kansas University’s baseball team went 2-0 on a trip to Houston last weekend, twice defeating Texas Southern.

The Jayhawks (7-2) won Saturday’s game, 9-1, behind the solid hitting of Matt Baty, who went 2-for-5 with a run and two RBI. Baty drove home two runs with a single in the first inning, and KU scored five runs in the fifth on three hits.

Junior pitcher Mike Zagurski allowed a run on five hits in 3 1/3 innings, strking out three batters. Senior Christ Smart (2-1) picked up the win with 3 2/3 innings of hitless relief, striking out five.

KU’s pitching staff was even more impressive Sunday, no-hitting the Tigers in an 8-0 victory.

FIve pitchers — Scott Sharpe, Ryan Knippschild, Jacob Jean, Sean Land and Clint Schambach — combined for KU’s first no-no since 1980, and first multi-pitcher no-hitter since 1960.

The Jayhawks scored two runs in the first inning, a run in the seventh and five runs in the ninth. Ritchie Price drove home four runs, and Andy Scholl and Travis Metcalf each had an RBI.

Scholl extended his hitting streak to eight games, and Sean Richardson had a hit in his seventh straight game.
