Recruit C.J. Miles, left, drives past Shane Laurie during a game at the K.C. Price Chopper Invitational. Miles, who played in the tournament last month in Shawnee, this weekend is making his offical visit to Kansas University.

Team Texas AAU guard C.J. Miles chatted with Team Texas alum Keith Langford before a Nike All-America camp pick-up basketball game last month in Indianapolis.

“Keith said, ‘You lose, you go to Kansas.’ I lost by one point. Keith said, ‘Congratulations,”’ Miles said with a grin.

Miles, a 6-foot-5 blue-chip player from Dallas Skyline High, didn’t commit orally to KU with Langford as a witness in Indy. He definitely is considering following in fellow left-handed shooter Langford’s footsteps at KU, however.

“Kansas has great tradition,” said Miles, who is in town for his official campus visit and will watch today’s KU hoops intrasquad scrimmage at 4 p.m. at Horejsi Center. “Kansas is like a pro team around here. Everybody knows the players. It’s a full gym every night.”

Miles, who has a final list of KU, Arizona, Georgia Tech, North Carolina and Texas, experienced KU hoops mania up close and personal while leading his AAU team to a second-place finish at last month’s Price Chopper Invitational in Shawnee.

KU fans flocked to the event to watch Miles and Team Texas teammate Kevin Rogers of Dallas South Oak Cliff, who has a final list of KU, Georgia Tech and Arizona.

“People would say hello and shake your hand when you walk into the gym even though they don’t know you,” Miles said of KU fans in Shawnee. “It’s not like they’re out to get you or anything.”

Miles, who said his strength may be his versatility, played the post last season at Dallas Skyline, the same school that turned out former NBA player Larry Johnson.

“He is very fluid. He can handle it, pass it and shoot it,” Skyline coach J.D. Mayo told rivals.com. “He is the tallest player on our team, so we start him in the post. But even though he plays inside a lot for us, he has hit quite a few threes. Most people think he will play the two or the three in college.”

Miles, who will visit Arizona on Sept. 10 and has yet to set dates for any other visits, is expected to vie for a spot on the McDonald’s All-America team his senior season.

“He is a high-scoring, high-major elite prospect,” said Shay Wildeboor, analyst for rivals.com, which has ranked Miles the No. 26 player nationally. “He has deep range, yet also has solid ball-handling skills. He can put it on floor and attack the basket. He’s strong defensively, always defending the other team’s best player.

“He’s also very versatile. He played inside in high school and point guard for his AAU team.”

  • Rogers’ visits: Rogers on Friday told rivals.com he would visit Georgia Tech on Sept. 4, Arizona Sept. 18 and KU on Sept. 25. Rogers has said KU is his leader.
  • Today’s scrimmage: KU coach Self said the Jayhawks today would treat the scrimmage “like a regular game, even though we’re not ready to play a game. I think it’ll be good for our players before we go to Canada.”

The Jayhawks will depart for Canada on Friday and play four games over Labor Day weekend versus Canadian college teams.

Today’s scrimmage is being held in 1,300-seat Horejsi Center because Allen Fieldhouse is not air conditioned and KU players might slip on wet spots on the fieldhouse court caused by perspiration.

“I have no idea how many will attend,” Self said of today’s event.

Doors open at 2:30 p.m., with no cost of admission.

“We’d certainly encourage everybody to get there early,” Self said. “In Allen maybe there’d be 3,000, maybe 6,000 (fans). I have no idea about what a scrimmage would draw.

“I asked our guys if this would take away from ‘Late Night (in Phog on Oct. 15 in Allen).’ They did not think it would. With the seating capacity of Horejsi, I can’t believe that would take away from Late Night.”

KU has four players who have been hobbled by injuries and may or may not play today. They include Langford, who had offseason knee surgery and tweaked his back last week; Christian Moody (sore hip); Darnell Jackson (ankle sprain); and J.R. Giddens (sore shoulder).
