Chris Rohr enjoyed his time at the Kansas Relays because he felt like he finally had some real competition.

The Lee’s Summit (Mo.) North standout won the boys discus by more than 16 feet.

“This is the best competition I’ve had this year,” said Rohr, who signed a track letter of intent with Missouri on Wednesday. “In Missouri, I’m kind of out there by myself.”

Saturday didn’t seem that much different to the spectators outside Memorial Stadium — or to Rohr’s competitors.

“That guy was amazing,” said Shawnee Mission North’s Mike Rivera, who threw a respectable 154-7, but settled for eighth place.

Rohr’s nearest competitor was Brady Maska of Hays, who finished second at 179-2. Three of Rohr’s four marks were 190 feet or better, and if it hadn’t been for a 15 mph wind out of the south, he might have left KU with a meet record.

After coming close to the record of 196-5 with a 195, Rohr threw 195-5 on his final attempt. That had the crowd eagerly anticipating his mark on the scoreboard, but the senior knew better.

“I didn’t think I had it,” said Rohr, who still watched, with his hands on his head, until the digital numbers popped up.

Rohr (6-foot-5, 235 pounds) won a state championship last year with a mark of “177 and change,” then gained 60 pounds in the offseason. He threw 200-3 two weeks ago at a meet in Raymore, Mo. That was the second-best mark in Missouri high school history and the fourth-best throw in the nation this year.

“A week before that, I threw 191,” he said. “Since then, I’ve been consistently around 190.”

Rivera, a Kansas University football recruit who was 12th in the shot put Friday, scratched on two of his three throws in Saturday’s discus finals, but he was happy with the experience.

“At those regular meets we go to, there’s not much competition,” he said. “At meets like this, there are guys that are a lot better than you and guys at your own level. I ended up with a pretty good throw.”

Rivera will be back on campus for the third day in a row today when the all-state linebacker attends KU’s spring football scrimmage.

“I’m really looking forward to that game,” he said.
