TULSA, OKLA. ? Kansas University’s men’s bowling club advanced to the Final Four for the first time Friday at the Intercollegiate Bowling Championships.
“This is farthest the men have advanced under this format,” KU coach Mike Fine said.
The Jayhawks, seeded fourth out of 16 schools, went 3-0 in match play, defeating Purdue, 4-1; knocking off Morehead (Ky.) State University, 4-1; and clipping Mohawk Valley Community College (N.Y.), 4-3.
KU will face Fresno State at 9 a.m. today in the semifinals.
The 14th-seeded Kansas women finished in fifth place.
KU’s Rhino Page and Kelly Zapf each were named honorable mention All-American selections.
Maple Shade, N.J. ? When you’re hot, you’re hot and Kansas University’s men’s bowling team was sizzling as it defended its championship in the Colgate Invitational on Tuesday.
Kansas won the 39-team event by 500 pins over Saginaw Valley State, rolling a 3,671 three-game team series that missed the all-time collegiate record by only six pins.
KU’s Rhino Page, a freshman from Wichita, and Marc D’Errico finished first and third respectively in individual standings. Page averaged 240 and D’Errico 236.7.
Jesse James, of Lawrence, was sixth and Jason Elliott finished 12th.
The KU women finished 15th, but Kelly Zapf wound up second in the individual standings with a tourney average of 230.
Kansas University’s men’s bowling team is ranked 11th in the last BWAA College Poll of the season.
Kansas climbed from 17th to 11th after winning its sectional over Nebraska, Wichita State and Central Missouri State. Nebraska is No. 8 in the poll.
Unranked in the year’s first poll, KU has qualified for the national championships on April 18-22 in Grand Rapids, Mich.
