Minneapolis ? The Kansas University volleyball squad rallied to beat No. 13 Minnesota, 3-2, Friday during the first round of the Nike Invitational. The Jayhawks lost the first and third games, but reeled off two straight victories to upend the Gophers.
Freshman Janaina Correa led KU (3-1) with 20 kills and 12 digs; senior Sarah Rome added 15 kills and 18 digs.
Junior Ashley Michaels rounded out the Jayhawk offense with 10 kills, and sophomore Josi Lima added seven kills, 12 digs and four block assists.
The Gophers (0-4), who finished 32-6 overall and advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2002, had not lost to KU in 11 meetings before Friday.
“I am so proud of this team — they really hung in there,” KU coach Ray Bechard said. “They played great in games four and five and stayed steady throughout, never losing confidence in each other.”
Today, the Jayhawks will face Marquette at 10 a.m. and Dayton at 5 p.m.
