KU swimmers trip ISU
Ames, Iowa — Kansas University’s swimming and diving squad beat Iowa State, 140-103, in a dual Friday. KU, which won its eighth event this season, earned eight first-place finishes.
KU track wins 12 events
Columbia, Mo. — The Kansas University track and field squad won 12 titles Friday at the 15th annual Kansas-Kansas State-Missouri Triangular.
Kansas University’s men’s club soccer team will meet Mississippi State and Cal-Berkeley Thursday in the NCSA National Tournament in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
Seeded No. 6 out of 24 teams, Kansas has a 3-1-1 record against teams in the tourney. KU will meet Mississippi State at noon and Cal-Berkeley at 6 p.m.
Brock Simpson, a senior at Topeka’s Washburn Rural High, will sign a letter of intent today to play baseball for Kansas University.
Simpson, a senior, has started for the Junior Blues the last three years. He batted .409 last season and was selected to the All-Centennial League’s second team.
Simpson likely will play third base or outfield at KU.
Three runners have signed national letters of intent with Kansas University’s cross country team.
The three are: Colby Wissel, from Kearney (Neb.) High; Mica Land, from Andover High; and Cortney Jacobs, from Atlantic (Iowa) High.
Wissel won the Nebraska state title this year and posted the eighth-best senior mile time in the United States (4:14.27) and the sixth-best senior two-mile time in the country (9:06.29). He won the individual title at this year’s Rim Rock cross country meet and the two-mile race at the Kansas Relays.
Land posted personal-best times of 5:10.52 in the mile and 2:19.84 in the 800-meter run. Land won the 2003 Class 4A 800 title and finished second in the state 3,200.
Jacobs won the Iowa Class 2A state championship in the 200 and 400.
WSU to ink Charger
Carbondale — Santa Fe Trail High senior Rob Musgrave will sign a national letter of intent today to play baseball at Wichita State University. A 6-foot-1 left-handed pitcher, Musgrave has compiled a 22-4 career record with the Chargers.
Former Kansas University chancellor Gene Budig was honored at a West Virginia University home football game last month.
Budig was WVU’s chancellor when the school’s 63,500-seat football stadium opened in 1980. Also honored was Sen. Jay Rockefeller, who was governor when the stadium was built.
“We have these two gentlemen to thank for building the foundation for greatness,” current WVU president David Hardesty said.
Budig, who is now on the faculty at Princeton University, was KU’s chancellor from 1981-1994.
Kansas University’s women’s golf team landed a local prospect when Annie Giangrosso of Overland Park signed a national letter of intent with the Jayhawks Wednesday.
Giangrosso is a senior at Overland Park Aquinas. She was the Kansas Class 5-6A state champion in 2001.
“We are thrilled to have Annie join our team next year,” KU coach Megan Menzel said. “She is a very experienced player and has had a great deal of success in the state of Kansas.”
KU men’s golf second at Nelson
Stanford, Calif. — The Kansas University men’s golf squad is tied for second place after the first round of the Nelson Invitational at Stanford Golf Course.
The Jayhawks opened the three-day event with a first-round total of 279 on the par-71 layout. Duke shot 278 and is in first place; Colorado and Washington are tied with KU after 279s.
Junior Andrew Price led the Jayhawks with a 4-under 67, tying for third individually. Junior Kevin Ward shot 68, freshmen Tyler Docking and Gary Woodland each carded a 72, and sophomore Ryan Rainer shot 73.
“We played very well in today’s first round and turned in a good score,” KU coach Ross Randall said. “It feels pretty good to have a fifth score of 73, and throw it out.”

KU doubles tandem advances to quarters
Salt Lake City — The Kansas University doubles team of seniors Emily Haylock and Kristen Steinbock advanced to the quarterfinal round Friday of the Intercollegiate Tennis Assn. Women’s Tennis Regional at Eccles Tennis Center.
The Jayhawk duo, seeded eighth, beat Kansas State’s Haley McIver and Maria Rosenberg, 8-4, then defeated Nebraska’s Gitte Ostermann and Katie Garcia, 8-4.
Haylock also played singles, defeating Colorado State’s Emily Kirchem, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, before losing to Nebraska’s Ostermann, 6-2, 6-1 in the round of 16.
Haylock and Steinbock will play Denver University’s Yanick Dullens and Suzana Maksovic in the quarterfinals at 4 p.m. MDT today.
Kansas University’s softball team is ranked 25th in the USA Today/NFCA Poll. It’s the first ranking for the Jayhawks since they finished the 2001 season ranked No. 25.
Kansas has a 14-4 record and is off to its best start since 1992. The Jayhawks will travel to Stillwater, Okla., this weekend.
KU will play New Mexico State in a doubleheader Saturday, then tangle with No. 23-ranked Oklahoma State in single games Sunday and Monday.
The Kansas University soccer team lost to the K.C. Legends Boys Under-16 team, 4-1, Wednesday at Jayhawk Field. Freshman Caroline Smith scored the lone goal for the Jayhawks, 0-2-1 after three spring matches.
Kansas will play Iowa and Wisconsin-Milwaukee March 29 in Iowa City, Iowa.
Kansas University junior bowler Marc D’Errico of Rochester, N.Y., was chosen to receive the 2003 American Bowling Congress Chuck Hall Star of Tomorrow Award. D’Errico was named the team’s most valuable player in 2002 and was rookie of the year in 2001.
Kansas University soccer coach Mark Francis announced Wednesday the signing of six high school athletes to national letters of intent for the 2003 season.
The Jayhawk signees include three Kansans: Nicole Alvarez from Wichita (Northwest High), Holly Gault from Spring Hill and Lacey Novak from Overland Park (Shawnee Mission South).
“We’re excited about this group coming in,” Francis said. “This is one of the best groups that we’ve had since I’ve been here. We think that they are going to come in and make an impact right away and make us better.”
Kansas also received letters from Danika Erickson from Lakewood (Colo.) D’Evelyn High, Jessica Kilpatrick from Englewood (Colo.) Arapahoe and Angie Miller from Rockford (Ill.) Boylan Catholic.
Kansas Relays meet director Tim Weaver was tapped head manager for the USA Track and Field Men’s National team for the IAAF World Indoor Track and Field Championships March 14-16 in Birmingham, England.
Weaver is in his eighth year with the Jayhawks and coordinates the Rim Rock High School Cross Country Classic. He graduated from Tulsa University in 1995 where he was a track athlete for current Kansas coach Stanley Redwine.
“I am obviously excited to work with the national team and help the greatest athletes in track and field retain the United States’ ranking as the world’s number one team,” Weaver said.
Cold and wet weather in Arkansas has forced a change in this weekend’s Kansas University baseball series at Arkansas-Little Rock. Instead of playing single games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday and a single game on Sunday.

Smith, rated 37th nationally by All Star Girls Report, averaged 16 points, six assists and four rebounds as she helped Lincoln reach the Class 4A state championship game the past two years.
“Sharita is the kind of player who can come in and impact our program immediately, she is that caliber of a guard,” Washington said. “What attracted us to her is that she is the ‘total package’ as a player. With her scoring, quickness and ability to create for teammates, she could become one of the top guards in the country.”

Unseld, 58, an alderman since 1999, drew 49 percent of the vote. He is a retired education adminstrator and businessman who has an undergraduate degree from KU and a masters degree from Western Kentucky.
As a sophomore at Kansas in 1962-63, Unseld averaged 17.2 points a game.
The next year Unseld averaged a team-high 18.4 points a game. He didn’t play basketball as a senior, quitting the team just days before the 1964-65 season started.
Unseld is a former director and current member of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

Schroeder lifts KU to 4-2 soccer win
San Diego Kansas University senior Melanie Schroeder set a school record with three assists in the Jayhawks’ 4-2 women’s college soccer victory over UNLV on Friday at the San Diego State Invitational.
Seniors Hilla Rantala and Natalie Hoogveld each tallied two goals apiece for KU, 2-1. The Rebels fell to 1-1-1.
The Jayhawks opened the scoring when Rantala accepted a pass from Schroeder and put the ball in the back of the net in the eighth minute. Six minutes later Hoogveld scored off another Schroeder assist. The Jayhawks led 2-1 at halftime.
Rantala scored next at 70:01 off a Rachel Gilfillan assist. Hoogveld added her second goal at 77:12 on a double assist from Schroeder and freshman Amy Geha.
The Aztecs scored a fluke goal off a corner kick in the 83rd minute to close the game’s scoring. Freshman Meghan Miller earned the win in goal for the Jayhawks. She had six saves.
“I thought we played really well in the second half,” KU coach Mark Francis said. “Even though we got out-shot, we really dominated. We’re looking forward to playing Sunday (against host San Diego State) with a chance to win the tournament.”
Kansas will meet San Diego State at 1 p.m. today.
KU women’s golf in 13th place
Myrtle Beach, S.C. Kansas University’s women’s golf team placed 13th of 31 schools after the first round of the Bay Tree Classic.
KU junior Heather Rose shot 79, good for a tie for 29th. Rose is six shots out of first place and two strokes out of 10th.
Juniors Kristy Straub and Jill MacDonald finished in a tie for 42nd and 52nd respectively. Junior Tiffany Kruggel shot an 84 and sophomore Jennifer Bawanan shot 85
East Carolina leads all teams with a score of 305.
Kansas University’s men’s golf team opens the season today at the Bank of Tennessee Ridges Classic in Knoxville.
Players will play 36 holes today then will play a final round of 18 holes on Sunday.
KU’s lineup will consist of Tyler Hall, Casey Harbour, Travis Hurst, Chris Marshall and Andrew Price.
Eight rounds of qualifying were used to determine KU’s five golfers.
“We seem to be very competitive. The younger players stepped up during qualifying and showed they were up to the test,” said KU coach Ross Randall.

Briscoe is a judge on the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals. She earned a bachelor’s degree in German and political science in 1969, graduated from the KU law school in 1973, and was appointed to the 10th Circuit Court by President Bill Clinton in 1995.

Kansas University’s varsity rowing team will make its only home appearances of the spring this weekend.
At 10:15 a.m. today the Jayhawks will tangle with Kansas State and at 10 a.m. on Sunday they’ll meet Texas.
Both matches are scheduled on the Kansas River by Burcham Park, Second and Indiana streeets.

to meet Baylor
Waco, Texas — Kansas will be hoping to continue its climb back up the Big 12 Conference softball ladder this weekend against Baylor.
The Jayhawks (22-23 overall; 2-8 in the Big 12) have a modest three-game win streak after dropping five in a row.
Baylor (21-24; 1-6) hasn’t played since being swept by Nebraska last weekend.
Two Jayhawks feted
Kansas University golfer Ashely Bishop and volleyball player Amanda Reves have earned Community Outreach Awards from the Big 12 Conference. The 19 awards given by league officials recognize student-athletes for volunteering.
Seabury wins, 8-7
Seabury Academy’s baseball team beat DeSoto’s freshmen, 8-7, on Friday at Seabury. Jake Schneider struck out 10, was the winning pitcher and had two doubles for Seabury, 1-1.
Lion sophs lose, 6-0
Lawrence High’s sophomore girls soccer team fell to SM South, 6-0, on Friday at YSI. Goalkeepers Sarah Shapiro and Tymber Dhans had 17 and eight saves respectively, while Caitlin Kennedy was cited for defense.
Firebirds fall Overland Park – Free State High’s girls soccer team was defeated by Shawnee Mission Northwest, 5-0, on Thursday. Lauren Wilkinson, Kelsey Mellard, and Missy Garcia all were cited for their play. Free State (3-4) next plays today at noon at Topeka Hayden.
Baker signs Firebird Free State High senior soccer player Colin Baumchen has signed a national letter-of-intent with Baker University. Baumchen was second-team All-Sunflower League and led the Firebirds in goals and total points last fall.
