KU defeats Pitt State, 103-73

Pittsburg State played Kansas University’s men’s basketball team close early in the first half, but the Jayhawks broke the game open with a 16-0 run midway through the half and coasted to a 103-73 victory Tuesday at Allen Fieldhouse.

The Jayhawks led the Gorillas just 16-14 midway through the first half before going on the run, which ended with just more than four minutes left before halftime. KU led by 20 points, 46-26, at the break, and the two teams played pretty evenly early in the second half.

Wayne Simien led KU with 25 points on 10-of-11 shooting and added seven rebounds. Keith Langford had 15 points and seven boards, and Aaron Miles added 12 points.

David Padgett had 12 points and five rebounds, Jeff Hawkins had eight points, and Jeff Graves and J.R. Giddens had seven points each. Bryant Nash and Jeremy Cash each added six points. Omar Wilkes added three points, and Moulaye Niang had a basket.

Eddie Jackson led PSU with 15 points, Greg Cambpell added 12 and Jason Taylor has 10 points. Jamey Richardson had nine points and 11 rebounds.

KU finished 43-of-69 shooting, but hit just three of 14 three-point shots. The Jayhawks were 14-of-20 shooting from the free-throw line.

Pitt State hit 26 of 66 field-goal attempts, including 9-of-29 shooting from beyond the arc. The Gorillas were 12 of 20 from the charity stripe.

The Jayhawks won the rebounding battle, 41-33, though the Gorillas did have 16 offensive boards. PSU turned the ball over 21 times, compared to just 15 turnovers for KU.

The Jayhawks will open the regular season against Tennessee-Chattanooga at 7 p.m. Nov. 21 at Allen Fieldhouse.
