Jayhawks strike early, upend Shockers

? Junior first baseman Ryan Baty went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and senior designated hitter Kevin Wheeler bashed a two-run home run, helping the Kansas University baseball squad earn a 7-3 victory Wednesday against Wichita State at Eck Stadium.

Junior right fielder Matt Tribble added two RBIs and senior left fielder Casey Spanish had an RBI double for the Jayhawks (34-21), who atoned for a 7-2 loss April 29 to Wichita State at Hoglund Ballpark.

Senior left-hander Pat Holmes (4-1) went the distance, allowing just seven hits and three runs in nine innings. He walked three and struck out seven.

KU got going early, scoring three runs in the first inning. Freshman Matt Baty led off with a single and promptly stole second. Big brother Ryan Baty’s single drove in Matt, then Wheeler’s homer gave the Jayhawks an early 3-0 lead.

KU tacked on two more in the third, building a 5-0 lead. Freshman Ritchie Price and Ryan Baty led off with back-to-back singles, then Wheeler singled to load the bases. Tribble followed with a two-run single, helping the Jayhawks open a commanding lead.

David Sanders (6-4) picked up the loss for the Shockers, who fell to 35-22 this season. Sanders lasted just two innings, allowing five runs on eight hits while striking out two.

The Jayhawks travel to College Station, Texas, this weekend for a three-game series against Texas A&M. First game is at 7 p.m. Friday.
