A former KU basketball player lost part of his finger after trying to break up a fight between two pit bulls Tuesday morning. Lawrence police say former KU forward Bud Stallworth was being treated at Lawrence Memorial Hospital for injuries to his left ring finger.
Lawrence Police Lt. Dave Cobb said Stallworth was trying to break up a fight between the two dogs in his back yard at 14 Westwood about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
Cobb said Stallworth was using a pipe to try to separate the dogs, when one of the pit bulls bit off a portion of his finger.
According to police, Stallworth then shot the dogs. One died at the scene. The city’s animal control officers found the other hiding in a nearby shed. It was taken to a local veterinarian and euthanized.
Stallworth’s family owned both the pit bulls. Police say Stallworth’s wife had rescued one of the animals from an animal shelter. he other belonged to his son.
Stallworth, a 6-foot-9 forward who was No. 12 on KU’s all-time scoring chart, played for KU from the 1969-1970 season to the 1971-1972 season and was a consensus All American in 1971. He is currently a business manager in the design and construction management department at KU.
