Just two nights after an 8-0 loss to the U16 Kansas City Legends Boys team, the Kansas University soccer team lost its second match against a boys team, 3-1, to the Welsh boys team Thursday at SuperTarget Field.
“We improved a lot compared to the last game,” head coach Mark Francis said. “I thought we were more confident during our possession and throughout the game.”
Kansas was held to just three shots the entire game, but took the game’s first lead at the 41:19 mark when junior Gabby Quiggle crossed a ball from the right to sophomore Caroline Smith, who deflected it enough to get it past the opposing keeper.
KU’s opponents answered back with 33 seconds left in the first half, knotting the score at one. The Welsh team finished the first half with 10 shots and one goal while Kansas’ keeper, junior Meghan Miller, stopped four of five shots on goal.
“We were able to keep the ball and stay composed when we attacked,” Francis added. “Defensively, I thought we did a better job as well holding off their pressure.”
The Welsh team was able to get off six total shots in the second half, two of which found the back of net, securing the win. Miller recorded three more saves in the second half and finished with seven on the day.
