Heitzman wins: Paul Heitzman won the men’s division of the Age-Graded Mile Saturday in Eugene, Ore., with an age adjusted time of 4:20.4. He also won the men’s 70-74 division of the 3,000 meters and the 5,000 meters.
- Rileys running: Steve Riley was the overall winner in the Ultimate Runner June 21 at Pittsburg. The event is a series of five races ranging from 100 meters to 5 kilometers. Matt Riley was second in the 15-19 age group.
- Firebird second: Micah Clark, 15, placed second in the United States of America school age weightlifting championships in Burlington, Vt. He lifted in the 56 kilogram weight division. His snatch mark was 55 kilos and clean and jerk 85 kilos in the 14-16 age group. Clark will be a Free State sophomore this fall.
- Golfers wanted: The Lawrence City Men’s Amateur Golf Tournament will be held July 19 at Alvamar Public and July 20 at Eagle Bend. Entry fee is $100. A banquet will be held after the second round. - Fish tales: Ben Jacobs and Ken Levine took first place at the Lawrence Fishing & Outdoor Club’s Buddy Tournament June 29 at Melvern Lake. Brian Kingsley and David Berkowitz took second, and Levine won the Big Bass contest with a 19-inch entry.
- Softball tourney: Ottawa Recreation Commission is taking registration for the Chautauqua Days Softball Tournament July 5-6. There will be two men’s divisions and a coed division with a three-game guarantee. ORC is also taking entries for a coach-pitch tournament July 5-6 for ages 8 and under with boys and girls divisions. - City girls ranked: The Lawrence Strikers, under 18 girls team, was ranked seventh in the state by www.gotsoccer.com. The team was composed of freshmen through seniors who played at Lawrence and Free State High Schools last spring.
- Reaney dominates: The Lawrence Aquahawks finished second in the A portion and first in the B/C portion of the Air Capital Swim Meet June 27-29 in Wichita.
Emma Reaney took home the high-point winner trophy in the A meet, and Logan Sloan earned the B/C meet high-point trophy.
Reaney, 10, won the 100 breaststroke, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 100 freestyle and 200 individual medley. She also took seconds in the 100 backstroke, 50 freestyle and 50 butterfly.
Other winners for Lawrence were Katie Swank, 14, in the 50 free and Stacey Rudman, 10, in the 50 backstroke. Swank also took third in the 200 free. Rudman had three third-place finishes.
Elle Weber, 10, had three second-place finishes and one third. Molly Albrecht, 12, had two runner-up finishes and a third. Jill Courtney, 15, had two seconds and a third, and Chris Wolff, 16. also had a second-place finish. Other third-place finishers were Heather Clark, 11, and Lauren Pipkin, 14.
- Track club earns medals: Robert Dunn won the midget boys shot put and discus and was runner-up in the javelin for the Lawrence Track Club June 27-28 at the USA Track and Field Junior Olympics at Emporia.
Other winners for Lawrence were Sylvester Birdsong in the young men’s high jump and Amanda Davidson in the midget girls 1,500-meter racewalk. Davidson finished ahead of teammate Iris Cliff.
Scott Penny was second in the intermediate boys shot put and third in the discus.
Bridgette Berry (primary girls) and Chris Smith (midget boys) both took home three third-place medals. Jennifer Taylor (youth girls), Paul Minor (intermediate boys) and Kameron Demby (intermediate boys) each won two third-place medals.
Other third-place finishers for Lawrence were Billy Parker, Gina Skinner, Kristina Taylor, Kendall Francisco, Apryl Hedges and Emily Torres.
- Alvamar ace: Susan Schmidtberger used a 9-iron Tuesday to ace the par-3, 90-yard No. 2 hole at Alvamar Country Club. Witnesses were Barbara Brand, Lisa Rueschhoff and Janet Lashbrook.
