Ron Warner, a reserve defensive end for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, is the only former Kansas University football player who will suit up for Sunday’s Super Bowl XXXVII in San Diego.
Warner, a 6-foot-2, 248-pounder, backs up Pro Bowler Simeon Rice, the NFL sacks leader with 15 1/2, at right defensive end. Warner, who played at KU in 1996, was suspended by the NFL for the first four games of the 2002 season, then cut by the Bucs on Oct. 7. He was re-signed on Nov. 28.
No former Jayhawks are on the Raiders’ roster. However, Oakland running backs coach Skip Peete played two seasons as a wide receiver at Kansas. Peete was an All-Big Eight selection in 1985 and a KU team captain in 1986 after transferring from Arizona.
