Kansas defeats UMKC, 100-46

By J-W Staff Reports     Jan 4, 2003

Kirk Hinrich scored 29 points, including 7-of-8 shooting from beyond the three-point arc, and the Jayhawks defeated the Kangaroos, 100-46.

Kansas (9-3) played without sophomore forward Wayne Simien for most of the game after he dislocated his right shoulder midway through the first half. Team doctor Larry McGee popped the shoulder back into place, but the number of games Simien will miss is unknown. He had a similar injury on the same shoulder in high school, which he reinjured in the McDonald’s High School All-American game after his senior season.

Hinrich’s career-high led the Jayhawks in points and he added nine rebounds. Nick Collison added 20 points and five rebounds. Keith Langford added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Jeff Graves had a career-high 10 points and 12 rebounds. Bryant Nash scored five points, Aaron Miles had five and Moulaye Niang, Brett Olson and Stephen Vinson each had two points. Christian Moody added a free throw.

The Jayhawks hit 10 of 24 three-point attempts and shot 54.4 percent (37-of-68) overall. The Kangaroos (1-11) hit just 29.6 percent (16-of-54) shots, including 7-of-17 shooting from three-point range. Kansas outrebounded UMKC, 59-22.

Michael Watson, the nation’s leading scorer, had 27 points – 20 after halftime. He was the only Kangaroo with more than one field goal after the break.
