Music City next challenge for KU baseball

? Kansas University’s baseball team will put its No. 17 national ranking on the line this weekend in the Music City Challenge.

The Jayhawks (11-3) will meet Middle Tennessee State at 3 p.m. today, Lipscomb at 2 p.m. Saturday and Vanderbilt at 1 p.m. Sunday.

KU coach Ritch Price probably will start three left-handers on the mound this weekend — senior Kevin Wheeler (2-0, 2.49 ERA), junior Josh Duran (1-1, 3.44) and senior Pat Holmes (1-0, 7.20).

KU’s probable position starters are Ryan Baty at first base, Ritchie Price at second, Brandon Shepard at shortstop and Travis Metcalf at third base. In the outfield, Casey Spanish will be in left, Lance Hayes in center and Matt Tribble in right. Sean Flynn is the catcher.

When not pitching, Wheeler will be the Jayhawks’ designated hitter.

Tribble leads the team in hitting with a .481 average. Baty is batting .396, Wheeler .378, Metcalf .370 and Spanish .367.
