Simien out for season

By J-W Staff Reports     Feb 27, 2003

Wayne Simien’s season is over.

After discussions Thursdsay morning between KU head coach Roy Williams, Simien, his parents and a number of doctors, the decision was made to hold Simien out of the Jayhawks’ remaining games.

“We’re basically shutting it down for the rest of the season,” Williams said. “We’ll go ahead and schedule the surgery and get on with the rehab.”

Simien dislocated the shoulder going after a rebound in the first half against UMKC on Jan. 4. Although medically cleared to return Jan. 21, Simien was held out as a precaution until the Iowa State game Feb. 16. He returned to thunderous applause from KU fans and scored seven points and grabbed seven rebounds in 18 minutes.

The sophomore forward’s second game back was even more impressive, as Simien scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the Jayhawks’ 94-87 victory over Colorado on Feb. 19.

Still coming off the bench, Simien contributed 17 points and seven boards in 24 minutes against Oklahoma, but played just one minute in Wednesday’s game before leaving. Bernard King ran into Simien on a layup attempt, and Simien grabbed his arm as soon as he regained his balance and walked off the court in pain. He suffered a sublexation of the shoulder, meaning it popped out of the socket but went right back in.

Surgery is expected to be performed in late March in New York, with recovery taking four to six months.
