? The KU swimming and diving team is in a three-way tie for third place after the first day of the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championships. The Jayhawks are tied with Iowa State and Missouri with a score of 60 points. The three teams trail the second-place Texas A&M Aggies by eight points.

“It was a really great way to start the Big 12 Championships,” KU coach Clark Campbell said. “At the championships, every team is faster and the competition is tight. It was good to have our team start out on the right foot.”

Kansas placed fourth in both the 800 freestyle relay and the 200 medley relay. The 800 free relay team of Amy Gruber, Jackie Krueger, Alyson Colver and Gina Gnatzig finished in 7:24.81, with Gruber recording an NCAA qualifying time with a first leg of 1:49.46. Her time also was a career best.

KU’s 200 medley relay team of Whitney Sondall, Kristen Johnson, Gruber and Krueger set a school record with a time of 1:43.56. The previous school record was 1:43.66.

The championships will continue Thursday. The events will include three-meter diving, the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and the 200 freestyle relay.
